Cooking Up Happiness: Weekly Baking and Cooking Sessions at Primrose Hill Care Home - Thumbnail

Cooking Up Happiness: Weekly Baking and Cooking Sessions at Primrose Hill Care Home

7 March 2026

At Primrose Hill Care Home, we know that food is so much more than just nourishment—it’s a source of joy, creativity, and connection. Every week, our residents look forward to our cooking and baking sessions, where the lounge becomes a hub of laughter, teamwork, and delicious aromas. These activities are carefully designed to engage the senses, encourage participation, and boost overall well-being.

The Power of Hands-On Cooking

Cooking and baking with our own hands is an incredible experience, especially for older adults. When residents handle ingredients, knead dough, chop vegetables, and season their creations, it stimulates three main senses: touch, smell, and taste.

  • Touch: Feeling the textures of dough, meat, and vegetables helps maintain motor skills and keeps hands agile.
  • Smell: Aromas of baking bread, sizzling burgers, or fresh herbs instantly lift moods and trigger happy memories.
  • Taste: Tasting as we go encourages curiosity, supports appetite, and brings a sense of achievement when residents enjoy the meals they’ve made.

These sensory experiences not only improve physical and mental wellbeing, but they also make mealtime more exciting and engaging.

Recent Weekly Highlights from our cooking club

Our residents have been busy chefs lately, creating dishes that are as fun to make as they are to eat! Here are some of the highlights from our recent cooking sessions:

Baking Day – Sausage Rolls
Our budding bakers had a fantastic time making sausage rolls this week. Residents enjoyed preparing the dough, shaping the rolls, and, of course, tasting the wares as they went along! The final results looked brilliant and tasted even better. A huge thank you to all the staff who supported and encouraged the residents throughout the session—your guidance makes these activities truly special.

Baking Day – Homemade Burgers
Another exciting baking day saw our residents preparing homemade beef burgers and egg & cheese burgers. Everyone took part in shaping patties, adding toppings, and assembling the perfect burgers. The end products looked amazing, and the taste was even better! Residents and staff alike enjoyed sharing these delicious creations.

Cooking Day – Resident-Favourite Pizzas
This week, our cooking session was all about pizzas, a firm favourite among our residents. From spreading the sauce to sprinkling cheese and selecting toppings, residents got fully involved in making their own personal pizzas. The result? Smiling faces and a kitchen filled with the irresistible smell of freshly baked pizza. Everyone enjoyed making and eating them, making it a truly memorable day.

Beyond Food: Why Cooking Matters

These cooking and baking sessions are not just about food—they’re about creating connections, memories, and a sense of accomplishment. Residents feel proud when they see and taste their creations, boosting self-esteem and confidence. Cooking together also strengthens social bonds, allowing residents to chat, laugh, and collaborate with one another and with staff.

Fun, Creativity, and Wellbeing

At Primrose Hill Care Home, we believe that the kitchen is a place of creativity, exploration, and joy. Weekly cooking sessions give our residents the chance to:

  • Learn new recipes or revisit cherished favourites
  • Engage their senses in a fun and meaningful way
  • Share moments of laughter and teamwork with staff and peers
  • Enjoy the satisfaction of making food that everyone loves

Whether it’s kneading dough, seasoning a burger, or sprinkling cheese on a pizza, our residents experience the joy of creation at every step. These activities don’t just fill the stomach—they fill the heart.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited to continue our culinary adventures in the weeks to come. From baking sweet treats to preparing hearty meals, the possibilities are endless. Each session is an opportunity to spark joy, inspire creativity, and make memories that our residents will cherish.

At Primrose Hill Care Home, we know that some of the best therapy comes straight from the kitchen—one bite, one smile, and one delicious creation at a time.

Dog Therapy Brings Joy to Heron Hill Care Home

17 February 2026

Residents at Heron Hill Care Home, in both Cavell and Wheawall units, recently enjoyed a heartwarming and uplifting experience as they welcomed their first Dog Therapy session of 2026. The visit featured six adorable and friendly Chihuahuas, accompanied by their wonderful owner, Nikki, who brought warmth, comfort, and happiness to everyone they met.

Animal therapy sessions play an important role in supporting emotional wellbeing, reducing anxiety, and encouraging positive social interaction, and this special visit was a perfect example of their powerful impact.

A Warm Welcome in Every Space

Throughout the day, Nikki and her six little companions visited residents in the main lounges, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere filled with smiles and laughter. The dogs also spent time offering one-to-one comfort in private bedrooms, ensuring that residents who preferred quieter moments or were unable to join group activities could still enjoy the experience.

Whether sitting on laps, offering gentle cuddles, or happily wagging their tails, the Chihuahuas quickly won everyone’s hearts.

 Bringing Comfort, Connection, and Calm

The presence of the dogs encouraged natural conversation and interaction among residents and staff alike. Many residents shared stories about pets they had owned in the past, recalling fond memories and meaningful moments from their lives.

For others, simply stroking the dogs and feeling their warmth provided a sense of calm and reassurance. These gentle interactions helped reduce stress, lift moods, and create a peaceful and comforting environment.

The Power of Animal Therapy

Animal-assisted therapy is widely recognised for its positive impact on mental and emotional wellbeing. It can help improve confidence, encourage movement, and provide companionship, particularly for those who may sometimes feel isolated.

At Heron Hill, we have seen first-hand how these visits bring out joy, engagement, and emotional connection in our residents. The friendliness and gentle nature of Nikki’s dogs made them especially well-suited to supporting our community.

Creating Meaningful Moments for Every Resident

One of the most special aspects of the session was seeing how each resident connected with the dogs in their own unique way. From excited greetings in the lounges to quiet cuddles in private rooms, every interaction was meaningful and valued.

Smiles, laughter, and tender moments filled both Cavell and Wheawall units throughout the day, reminding us of the simple yet powerful joy that animals can bring.

Thank You to Nikki and Her Wonderful Companions

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Nikki and her six lovely Chihuahuas for sharing their time, kindness, and companionship with our residents. Their visit truly brightened the day and left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

At Heron Hill Care Home, we remain committed to providing enriching experiences that support wellbeing, dignity, and happiness. We look forward to welcoming Nikki and her furry friends back again soon for more moments of comfort, connection, and joy.

As the soup slowly came together, residents had the opportunity to taste it at different stages, discovering how flavours develop and deepen over time. This interactive approach made the experience both educational and rewarding.

Of course, no session would be complete without a little treat — and a cheeky doughnut made a welcome appearance, reminding us that balance and enjoyment are just as important as healthy eating.

Sharing Stories and Building Connections

These moments of connection are at the heart of everything we do at Aaron Court. Cooking together provided the perfect opportunity for residents to express themselves, listen to one another, and feel truly part of a community.

Sitting down together to enjoy something they had helped create gave residents a real sense of pride and achievement. The shared meal was filled with smiles, compliments, and appreciation for everyone’s efforts.
