On 30th August, we had the joy of celebrating a truly special milestone at Barleycroft Care Home – Marjorie turned 102 years old.
Marjorie has been part of our Barleycroft family since April 2024. Before a spell in hospital slowed her down, she was known around the home as a wonderfully active and independent lady, always ready for a chat and always the life of the room.
Marjorie’s birthday was marked in true style. Dressed in a sash for the occasion, she spent the day surrounded by cards, balloons, and the company of the people who care for her most — our activities assistant Saresh, along with several of our carers and nurses, made sure she felt like the star of the show.
Our kitchen team baked her a special cake for afternoon tea, and the dining room came alive with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” in her honour. Marjorie, ever the social butterfly, relished every moment of the attention and the company — she has always loved being surrounded by people, and her birthday was no exception.
Reflecting on the celebrations, Marjorie was visibly moved. Looking back on a life so richly lived, she found herself thankful and emotional, taking a moment to appreciate just how much she has experienced in 102 remarkable years.
Marjorie was born and raised in Hackney, the daughter of John Henry and Lilly Eliza. Her father worked as a piano tuner, and Marjorie grew up alongside a brother and two sisters, all of whom have since passed away. At school, she had a particular love for music and art — interests that no doubt owed something to her musical upbringing.
As a young woman, Marjorie served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, playing her part during one of the most defining periods in British history. She still remembers VE Day vividly. Travelling home from leave that day, she recalls looking out to see fires burning and street parties breaking out across the country as the nation celebrated. Marjorie joined in the celebrations herself, enjoying the parties and staying out the whole night — a memory that has clearly stayed with her ever since.
