Job Overview:
The Activities Assistant plays a key role in creating a vibrant, engaging, and supportive environment for the residents in our Care Home. This position involves assisting with the planning, organizing, and delivering a wide range of recreational, social, and therapeutic activities that cater to the diverse needs and abilities of elderly residents. The Activities Assistant works closely with other staff to promote residents’ physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
Elmcroft Care Home is a 52 bedded care home in a rural setting in Little Totham. The team have created a successful collaborative and supportive environment to work in and for residents to live in. The focus has been on developing an environment that is supportive while encouraging independence as far as possible to ensure those who live here feel empowered, comfortable and happy here.

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in Planning and Organizing Activities: Support the Activities Coordinator in developing a variety of engaging and meaningful activities for residents, including physical exercises, cognitive stimulation, arts and crafts, games, social events, outings, and life enrichment programs.
- Conduct Group and One-on-One Activities: Lead or assist in group activities (e.g., bingo, arts and crafts, music therapy, etc.) and provide individualized attention to residents who may need extra support or prefer one-on-one interaction.
- Encourage Resident Participation: Promote an inclusive and positive environment where all residents, regardless of physical or cognitive limitations, are encouraged to participate in activities. Provide assistance as needed to ensure participation.
- Provide Support During Activities: Assist residents with mobility, during activities. Ensure residents’ safety and comfort throughout all activities.
- Create a Fun and Engaging Environment: Use creativity and innovation to enhance the enjoyment of activities, ensuring they are stimulating and aligned with residents’ preferences, interests, and capabilities.
- Observe and Report Resident Well-being: Monitor residents during activities, noting any changes in physical or emotional health. Report concerns to appropriate staff, including the nursing team or Activities Coordinator, as necessary.
- Assist in Special Events: Help organize and implement special events such as holiday parties, themed gatherings, family events, or outings to external locations, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
- Maintain Records: Keep accurate records of residents’ participation in activities, documenting preferences, attendance, and any significant changes in their needs or abilities.
- Set Up and Clean Up Activities: Ensure all materials, equipment, and supplies for activities are prepared in advance. After events, clean up and store items appropriately.
- Promote Socialization: Create opportunities for residents to interact and develop social connections, helping to reduce isolation and loneliness. Foster a positive atmosphere of companionship and engagement.
- Assist in Program Evaluation: Provide feedback on activities, making suggestions to improve and enhance the quality of life for residents.
- Attend Staff Meetings and Training: Participate in regular staff meetings and attend relevant training or professional development opportunities to stay informed about best practices in elderly care and activity planning.
Qualifications:
- Education: GCSE minimum, would suit someone with a drama or PE interest.
- Experience: Prior experience working with the older person, particularly in a residential or healthcare setting, is highly preferred. Experience in planning or leading group activities is also beneficial.

Physical Requirements: Ability to assist residents with mobility and perform tasks that may involve bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
Working Conditions:
- Hours: 20 hours some weekend work
- Work Environment: The role is performed in a residential home for the elderly, which may involve both indoor and outdoor activities. Some activities may involve transporting or assisting residents during outings.
