18 September 2025
On 17th September 2025, Heron Hill Care Home joined our friends from Home Instead South Lakes to host a meaningful Dementia Awareness Day at Beetham Garden Centre.
Despite the typical British weather doing its best to dampen spirits, the day was filled with warmth, compassion, and a shared commitment to understanding and supporting those living with dementia.
One of the highlights of the event was the arrival of the Dementia Awareness Bus — an innovative and immersive experience designed to help individuals understand what it’s like to live with dementia.
The dementia bus uses advanced sensory technology to replicate the challenges faced by people living with the condition. Participants are invited to step inside and experience a series of tasks while wearing goggles, headphones, and spiky insoles, each simulating the sensory changes that accompany dementia. This powerful experience helps participants develop a deeper appreciation of how dementia affects perception, movement, and day-to-day life.
The initiative aims to foster empathy, awareness, and education, not just among care professionals but also the wider community. By offering this immersive experience, we hope to create a more dementia-friendly society—one where individuals living with dementia are understood, respected, and supported.
A heartfelt thank you to Home Instead South Lakes, Beetham Garden Centre, and everyone who joined us on the day. Your participation and enthusiasm made this event truly special, even in the face of the rain!
At Heron Hill Care Home, we remain dedicated to raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and supporting those living with dementia and their families every step of the way.
