102 Miles walked for Dementia: £2,000 Raised to Transform Lives at two care homes in Huntingdon

10 June 2025

We are incredibly proud to share the inspiring story of three dedicated team members who recently undertook an extraordinary challenge to support our residents living with dementia. Danielle Keeble, Deputy Manager at Cromwell House Care Home, Katie Williams, Deputy Manager at Primrose Hill Care Home, and Jonathan Budd, Kitchen Assistant at Primrose Hill, walked an impressive 102.8 miles from Huntingdon to Great Yarmouth to raise funds for redecorating and enhancing the dementia floors in both care homes.

Both of the care homes are located in Huntingdon.

Their remarkable journey was driven by a heartfelt mission: to transform these spaces into vibrant, comforting, and dementia-friendly environments that promote reminiscence and well-being. Thanks to their dedication and the generosity of supporters, they successfully raised £2,000, which will go directly toward making these improvements for the benefit of our residents.

Creating dementia-friendly environments is vital in helping residents feel safe, comfortable, and engaged. Familiar surroundings and thoughtful décor can have a profound impact on their quality of life. Danielle, Katie, and Jonathan’s commitment to this cause highlights not only their professionalism but also their genuine care and compassion for the people they support daily.

Katie Williams reflected on the challenge, saying that it was the hardest of all the fundraising efforts they have undertaken. The physical toll was painful and tiring, but the team is immensely proud of the distance covered and what they have achieved for their residents. Over the last three years, the team has worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds to support dementia care activities, including doll therapy nurseries, animated cats, and hugs therapy dolls. Recently, they completed Dementia Strategy training, which provided fresh ideas for decorations, signage, and activities tailored to improve residents’ experiences. Katie also shared excitement about planning new challenges for the upcoming year.

Danielle Keeble expressed immense pride in completing the walk despite the physical and mental challenges. She emphasized that their efforts were motivated by a desire to improve the quality of life for residents and to implement some of the new ideas inspired by the dementia strategy training. The team is already thinking about how to raise the bar even higher for future challenges.

Amanda, the Home Manager at Primrose Hill, praised the team’s unwavering support, care, and commitment to the residents and the home over the past three years. She highlighted how the team continually seeks ways to enhance residents’ lives through fundraising and innovative ideas. Amanda looks forward to seeing what the team will achieve next.

Carol, the Care Home Manager at Cromwell House, also expressed her pride in Danielle and the team. She acknowledged the tremendous physical and mental effort involved and praised the group for going above and beyond for the residents. Carol noted the incredible support the team has received from residents, relatives, and staff, calling them a true asset to the homes and Abbey Healthcare as a whole.

From everyone at Cromwell House, Primrose Hill, and the wider Abbey Healthcare family, a heartfelt thank you goes to Danielle, Katie, and Jonathan for their incredible dedication and achievement. Their journey not only raised valuable funds but also increased awareness and brought the community together in support of dementia care.

Donations remain open, and every contribution will help transform the dementia floors to better serve our residents. We will be sharing updates on the redecoration progress and future fundraising events in the weeks ahead.
